Abstract
1293411 Vacuum treating steel INSTITUT METALLURGII IM A A BAIKOVA AN SSSR 31 Dec 1969 63590/69 Heading C7D Steel containing 0À10-0À15% C is vacuum treated in the presence of 1-2% of its weight of an oxidizing slag to produce a carbon content of 0À02-0À07% and oxygen of 0À003-0À01%; prior to or during vacuum treatment the carbon and the oxides in the metal may be brought into stoichiometric relationship by addition of a deoxidizer such as coke or an oxidizing agent such as scale, ore or agglomerate, while ferro-silicon, calcium-silicon or granulated aluminium may also be added at an appropriate stage for deoxidation and/or elimination of ageing. In a modification steel containing 0À05-0À1% C is treated in the presence of slag to produce iron containing 0À005-0À01% carbon and 0À005-0À02% oxygen. When the intensity of reaction diminishes the bath may be stirred by gas injection.
