Abstract
1284496 Ferrites, aluminates and galliates of lanthanide elements COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DE RAFFINAGE 20 March 1970 [21 March 1969] 13502/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division H1] A ferrite, or solid solution of a ferrite of a lanthanide including yttrium is prepared by subjecting mixed citrates of at least one lanthanide element and at least one other trivalent element selected from Fe, Al or Ga to pyrolysis. Ferrite is defined in the Specification as (1) compounds having the general formula LnFeO 3 crystallizing in the perovskite system and existing for all lanthanides including yttrium; (2) compounds having the general formula Ln 3 Fe 5 O 12 crystallizing in the garnet system and which exist for the series of lanthanides from Sm to Lu and also for Y; (3) compounds of class (1) or (2) in which all or part of the Fe has been substituted with Al or Ga. A solid solution of a ferrite is defined as a solid solution of the mixed oxides defined in (1), (2) or (3) above in which a lanthanide element Ln, has been partly substituted by another, Ln<SP>1</SP>, i.e. corresponding to the formulae Ln 1-x Ln<SP>1</SP> x FeO 3 or Ln 3-x Ln<SP>1</SP> x Fe 5 O 12 , as well as compounds in which the iron has been partly substituted by Al or Ga e.g. LnFe 1-x Al x O 3 or Ln 3 Fe 5-x Al x O 12 . In a particular embodiment a mixed citrate containing a single lanthanide element and one other trivalent element is employed. The pyrolysis may be carried out by bringing the temp. of the mixed citrates progressively from ambient to 600-700‹ C. The crystals so obtained may then be brought up to a temp. of 1200‹ to 1300‹ C. so as to regulate the dimensions of the crystal grain. The mixed citrates may be obtained by dissolving the single citrates in heated ammoniacal water in the proportions necessary to obtain the desired product and then evaporating the solution.
