Abstract

1279500 Treating tobacco PHILIP MORRIS Inc 25 Sept 1969 [28 Oct 1968] 47367/69 Heading A2C Tobacco plant parts are extracted with water, the extract is treated to remove therefrom 20 to 95% by weight of the metallic ions whose salts in tobacco melt at temperatures from 600 to 850‹F, and the treated extract is then recombined with the extracted tobacco. The metal ions, especially potassium ions, are removed by treatment of the extract with a cation exchange resin either alone or following treatment with an anion exchange resin, or are removed by electrodialysis. In the examples, powdered bright tobacco stems are extracted and, after recombining with the treated extract, are cooked under pressure, refined, and the refined slurry cast into sheets. Where a strongly acidic cation exchange resin was used alone, the refined slurry was adjusted to pH 5.5 by the addition of ammonia, calcium hydroxide, or a mixture of potassium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide, before casting.
