Abstract

1279132 I C engine cooling systems, heating charge CHRYSLER UNITED KINGDOM Ltd 24 March 1970 [2 April 1969] 17203/69 Heading F1B An I, C, vee engine has a cooling jacket 14, 15, Fig. 1, formed in the cylinder block and cylinder head of each bank, a supply connection from a heat exchanger to a chamber 26, Fig. 3, located between the cylinder heads having outlet ports 27 leading to the cooling jackets and a return connection from the cooling jackets to the heat exchanger. Coolant leaving the cylinder banks passes via a further chamber 30 and a housing 33, containing a thermostatically controlled valve, to a radiator (not shown). The housing port 34 is closed when the coolant temperature is low so that coolant is by-passed to a manifold 20 and leads to either the matrix of a heater from whence it returns to the coolant pump inlet or leads directly to the coolant pump inlet so that when port 34 is closed coolant by-passes the radiator. Fuel/air mixture from a carburettor passes via ports 23 and passages 22, Fig. to inlet passage 17. Part of manifold 20 may be encircled by a jacket 24, Fig. 3, through which exhaust gases are passed to pre-heat the mixture.
