Abstract

1278676 Polyacrylonitrile fibres CELANESE CORP 5 Aug 1969 [5 Aug 1968] 39107/69 Heading B5B [Also in Division C1] Filamentary material consisting of an acrylic polymer containing at least 95 mole per cent of recurring acrylonitrile units, drawn at a sufficiently high draw ratio to endow it with a tenacity of at least 5 g.p.d., and retaining its filamentary configuration for at least three minutes on heating at 300‹ C. is thermally stabilized by continuously passing it through an oxygen-containing atmosphere in a zone maintained at a temperature of at least 260‹ C. at a rate such that the issuing material has a chemically combined oxygen content of at least 7% still retains its filamentary configuration, does not burn in a match flame and is capable of undergoing carbonization. The filamentary starting material may have been drawn to such an extent as to impart to its single filament tenacity of 7À5 to 8 g.p.d., and it may consist of an acrylonitrile homopolymer or a copolymer of at least 99 mole per cent of acrylonitrile units and up to 1 mole per cent of one or more monoethylenically unsaturated comonomer units such as styrene, ethyl acrylate, ethyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride and vinyl pyridene. The oxygen-containing atmosphere used may be air. The filamentary material may be a multifilament yarn. The material may be heated to from 260‹ to 290‹ C. for a period of from 8 to 70 minutes. The material may be heated to from 260‹ to 290‹ C. for a total residence time of at least 3 minutes, preferably at least 5 minutes, and may subsequently be passed through a zone provided with an oxygencontaining atmosphere in which the temperature progressively increases in the direction of travel of the material to between 330‹ and 400‹ C. The thermally stabilized material may be heated at a temperature of from 900‹ to 3000‹ C. in an inert atmosphere until a carbonized product is formed. Alternatively the material may be heated at a temperature of from 1500‹ to 3000‹ C. in an inert atmosphere until substantial graphitization of the material has occurred. The thermal stabilization zone may be maintained at a temperature of from 260‹ C. up to about 10‹ C. below the temperature at which the starting material shows signs of losing its filmentary configuration. If desired, the material may be heated initially in an oxygen-containing atmosphere at a temperature somewhat below 260‹ C., e.g. 240‹ C., for a brief period provided that the temperature is increased to at least 260‹ C. for a substantial part of the stabilization period.
