Abstract

1277425 Curable securing compositions EXPLOSIVES & CHEMICAL PRODUCTS Ltd 6 Nov 1969 [6 Nov 1968] 52703/68 Heading C3P [Also in Division F2] A hand kneadable securing composition comprises two portions each having a common contacting surface, the first portion comprising a polymerisable monomer and an unsaturated polyester resin derived from a dihydric alcohol, and an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid (and optionally a saturated dicarboxylic acid), in admixture with one or more inorganic fillers therefore and the second portion comprising a hardener for the resin and monomer, in admixture with one or more inorganic fillers therefore, such that when the two portions are kneaded together, the hardener causes polymerization between the polyester resin and monomer, any reaction between the monomer and polyester prior to kneading, being prevented by the formation of a hard thin layer of cured polyester/ monomer at the interface of the first and second portions. The composition may take the form of, for example, a two layered strip which may be rolled into a coil, or coaxial two component rod, having a core of one of said portions, and a sheath of the other. The composition may be packaged in a hydrocarbon-impermeable material such as a polyamide or polyester film, optionally laminated with metal foil. The first portion may contain an amine accelerator for the curing reaction, which amine may be an integral part of the polyester molecule. The total monomer present is preferably 5-25% by wt. of the composition, the total amount of polyester resin 15-35% by weight and the filler, 35-80% by weight. Examples describe the use of a commercially available unsaturated polyester resin dissolved in styrene together with di-isooctyl maleate tetraallyl sorbitol or diallyl phthalate as additional monomer, the hardener being benzoyl peroxide, and the fillers being dolomite dust, asbestos fibre and finely divided silica, in admixture.
