Abstract

[Also in Division E1 ] A structural material suitable for use for window sills comprises a sheet of paper impregnated with a thermosetting resin to which are bonded (e.g. by means of a synthetic resin) spaced portions of a mesh structure between which extend other portions of the mesh structure which are spaced from the sheet. The sheet material 10 comprises paper impregnated with a thermosetting resin, e.g. a melamine or phenol resin, at least one surface of which has a decorative finish, and the mesh material 11 may be expanded metal, e.g. steel, having ribs or corrugations formed at intervals, the ribs lying parallel or sets of ribs being provided at right angles, or wire netting folded into corrugated form to provide a series of parallel ridges. Alternatively the mesh structure may be constituted by a plurality of parallel ribs, e.g. of the same material as the sheet and welded thereto during manufacture, provided with a series of holes the holes in respective ribs being in alignment, and a plurality of rods arranged to lie each in corresponding holes in each rib or a length of wire interlaced through the holes. In construction of a sill, wood or other edging strip 13 fastened by adhesive to sheet 10, is rebated at 14 to receive the edge of mesh 11 and is faced with a strip of material 15 similar to sheet 10. A thin layer of grouting material is applied to brickwork 16 and the sill pressed into it. Reinforcing ropes may be included in one direction only of the mesh material and run across the width of the sill.
