Abstract

1,273,179. Spray carburetters; treating charge. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. Aug. 20, 1969 [Nov. 5, 1968], No.41556/69. Divided out of 1, 171, 754. Heading F1B. In a first modification of the I.C. engine fuel vapour absorption system shown in Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) and 3 of patent Specification the vapour desorbed from chamber 50 when the engine is running is delivered through pipes 18, 18<SP>1</SP> to the carburetter venturi 9 upstream of throttle valve 14, rather than to intake manifold 40. The suction applied to chamber 50 and thus the rate of desorption is therefore a function of the rate of airflow to the engine. In a second modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) pipes 18, 18<SP>1</SP> lead to intake manifold 40 and valve 70, which is opened automatically when the exhaust back pressure exceeds a given value, includes a sonic orifice (73) such that the suction applied to chamber 50 remains substantially constant regardless of the air-flow to the engine.
