[Also in Division D1] Webs, strips or ribbons of textile pile material are produced from wider webs, strips or ribbons with at least the pile at least partially comprising thermoplastic material, by heating the starting web, strip or ribbon along those portions which are to form the longitudinal marginal edges of the web, strip or ribbon to the softening temperature of the pile to soften only the pile, pressing the heated portions to cause the pile in a plastic condition to be driven into the interstices of the pile carrier material, and cutting along these portions to form webs, strips or ribbons without the physical state of the warp and weft threads of the pile carrier material being substantially modified. Prior to heating, the pile may be reduced to a length such that the plastic mass of pile produced by the heating is not substantially greater than the volume available to receive this mass in the interstices of the pile carrier material. The reduction in length is effected by cutting, shearing, grinding, milling, abrading or trimming. The heating and pressing operations may at least partially overlap in time and they may be performed simultaneously. The cutting operation may be carried out simultaneously with the heating and pressing operations.
