Abstract
1,260,630. Diesel hammers. ISHIKAWAJIMA - HARIMA JUKOGYO K.K. 23 Oct., 1970 [24 Oct., 1969 (3)], No. 50440/70. Heading B3H. [Also in Divisions Fl and F2] A diesel hammer comprises a ram 2, an anvil 3 and a cylinder housing 1 defining a combustion chamber 5 and a fuel pump 7 operated by the air pressure within the chamber 5. The fuel is supplied from a tank 6 around the cylinder and pumped along lines 12, 13 to fuel injection nozzles 8, 8<SP>1</SP>. The pump 7 comprises a piston 31, Fig. 12, which when reciprocated closes the fuel duct 29 and forces the fuel through a non-return valve 35. The piston 31 is moved by a push-rod 27 operated by compressed air in a chamber 24 connected by a passage 14 to the combustion chamber. In operation, the ram 2 falls under gravity to compress the air in the chamber 5 and actuate the fuel pump 7. The fuel injected into the chamber 5 is ignited by the air which has been heated adiabatically. The ignited fuel causes further movement of the fuel pump piston 31 and the injection of more fuel. The fuel injection nozzles 8, 8<SP>1</SP> may direct the fuel over an angular distance to each side or one side of the nozzle axis, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). A valve (54), Fig. 13 (not shown), may be provided in the fuel line from the pump to the nozzles. The valve is spring-biased open and closed by rope-actuated levers (52), (53).
