Abstract

1,252,911. Shaft seals. CARL FREUDENBERG. 15 Nov., 1968, No. 54301/68. Heading F2B. In a shaft sealing ring comprising a lip 8 having a sealing edge 6 for engaging the shaft dovetail-like shaped projections 2-5 are provided on one side of the lip adjacent the edge 6, the projections providing edges extending substantially obliquely to the ring axis and acting, in use, to oppose leakage irrespective of the direction of rotation of the shaft. The projections may be circular 2, triangular 3, semicircular 4 or triangular with curved edges 5 but normally only one kind is used in one ring. The lip 8 is urged inwardly by a garter spring 9. The ring is made by first moulding it complete with the projections, Fig. 1 (not shown) and then cutting back the lip so that the sealing edge 6 intersects the projections.
