Novel compounds of the formulµ where R<SP>10</SP> is H or one of the groups R<SP>11</SP> is H, CH 3 or one of the groups R<SP>5</SP> is H or CH 3 ; R<SP>7</SP> is oxo, C 1-6 alkylenedioxy, or α-H(#-R<SP>8</SP>), where R<SP>8</SP> is OH or a carboxylic ester or acid-labile ether thereof; R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are each C 1-6 alkyl; R<SP>2</SP> is H or C 1-6 alkoxy; each R is independently selected from saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, aliphatic, carbocyclic and carbocyclio-aliphatio radicals, and 0R<SP>12</SP> is an acid-labile ether group are prepared by reacting phosphonates with compounds of the formulµ respectively. The phosphonates are converted to carbanions by reaction with base at about - 150‹ to- 20‹ C. and about an equimolar amount, based on the phosphonate, of the enol lactone is added and the product isolated at below 0‹ C. The process must be substantially anhydrous and is preferably effected in an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen or argon.
