Abstract
1,251,583. Vacuum switches; contacts. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 28 Feb., 1969 [8 March, 1968], No. 10858/69. Heading H1N. A contact for a vacuum switch has a discshaped base portion formed with an annular groove 51 and an annular contact portion 25 formed with an inward annular shoulder 53 and received within the groove 51, the central part 55 of the base being deformed at 57 to grip the shoulder 53. The contact portion 25 is brazed to base 18 at 60 and current is normally conducted through the brazed joint. Should the latter fail current flows instead through the shoulder 53 and lip 57. It is stated that under suitable conditions the heat generated by the current flowing along the alternative, higher resistance, path may be sufficient to remake the joint at 60. The disc shaped base is slotted at 32 as described in Specification 1,250,420 to provide radial and circumferential fingers 33, the current flowing in these when the arc is transferred causing the arc to rotate in known manner. The slots 32 extend inwardly (36) of the lower edge of the contact portion 25.
