Abstract

[Also in Division G1] In an antidazzle headlighting system for a road vehicle in which an image of the headlamp filament (not shown) is formed in an aperture 15 in a mask 14 and a well-defined image of the aperture is projected forwardly to constitute the beam, a shutter 18 mounted on a winding 30 is movable across the aperture against the action of a spring 33 when the winding is energized by a photo-cell (not shown) sensitive to light received from an oncoming vehicle, the winding being slidable on one limb 27a of a steel frame 27 in the field of a permanent ferrite magnet 28 secured to the other limb 27b. Light reaches the photo-cell through a second aperture 22 which can be covered by a second shutter 32 movable with the first shutter, hunting of the shutters being damped by an extension 51 of the shutter-carrying strip 31 which is slidable in a bore in a block 52 of polytetrafluoroethylene. The block can move within limits determined by lugs 53 over a distance less than the amplitude of the hunting, the coefficient of static friction between the block and the extension being relatively high so that during hunting the block moves with the extension and its inertia, together with the repeated impacts between the ends of the block and the abutments, has a damping effect. The coefficient of dynamic friction is, however, relatively low so that the extension can slide in the bore with little resistance during normal operation of the shutters. In a modification the block is made of some other material and its bore is lined with P.T.F.E. The headlamp is provided with a dichroic reflector which reflects little red or infra red light and the photo-cell is chosen to be most sensitive at these wavelengths so that the likelihood of the system being operated by its own reflected light is minimized.
