1,245,272. Furnace black. DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER SCHEIDEANSTALT. 18 Oct., 1968 [19 Oct., 1967 (2)]. No. 49437/68. Heading C1A. Furnace black is made by incomplete combustion of liquid hydrocarbons, optionally in the presence of a fuel gas, where the combustion flame is supported by air containing more than its natural 21% by volume, of oxygen. The percentage range specified is from 22 to 100%. By arrangement of the air/oxygen mixture with the amount of starting material, blacks of different specific surfaces can be made. The criterion specified, in order to work at a predetermined temperature to produce such blacks, is that the oxygen must be reduced in proportion to the amount of starting material for the black, although simultaneously being present to greater than 21% by volume in the air used. Two methods are specified, one involving reduction of the amount of oxygen itself, and the other involving increasing the amount of starting material.
