A shortenable umbrella frame having a generally rectangular transverse cross-section comprises a crown 6, Fig. 2, an auxiliary slider 13, a main slider 14 and a handle (29), Fig. 4 (not shown), which is oblong in plan view, said main slider comprising two diametrically opposed wings 15, 16 and a sleeve 17 formed with a channel 20, Fig. 3, for the reception of a part 21, operated by a release button 24, said channel extending beneath wing 15, and a recess 22 on the side of the sleeve 17 opposite channel 20. The recess 22 is shaped so that the width of the sleeve 17 in the longer dimension of its cross-section increases downwardly. A hollow 23 may be provided into which part 21 is pivotable. The sleeve 17 of the main slider may have a polygonal transverse cross-section which is symmetrical about axis y-y. A spring 18 mounted between the sliders affects self-opening of the umbrella. Figures 5-7 (not shown), illustrate a modification in which the handle (29) is formed with a bush (30) having recesses (34) formed by guiding surfaces (35) which receive the wings 15, 16 of the main slider when the umbrella is closed. Main slider 13 has diametrically opposite wings 12 to which are pivoted struts 10 which support ribs 9. The umbrella has a stick (1), Fig 1 (not shown), which consists of telescopic sections of hexagonal tube 2, 3, (4) held in the operative position by detents 5. Auxiliary stays which are pivoted to wings 15, 16 of slider 14 are pivotally attached to struts 10 by means of hook-shaped ends, not shown, located in corresponding holes in the said struts. When the umbrella is closed hinges in the ribs are received in the handle as disclosed in Specification 1,235,633.
