Abstract

1,131,310. Frame rollers. BARROW HEPBURN & GALE Ltd. 16 Feb., 1967 [25 Nov., 1965], No. 50199/65. Heading B8B. [Also in Divisions A5 and F2] A safety device for arresting a person falling from a height comprises a casing 1 which can be connected by an eyelet to a fixed anchorage and through which a safety line supporting the person concerned can be drawn over a centrifugal clutch mechanism which when rotated above a certain speed applies a brake to the safety line. The clutch mechanism 3 comprises a flanged disc 12 rotatably mounted on a shaft 10 and defining a central cavity in which a second disc 13 is freely rotatable with respect to the disc 12. An arcuate weight 16 is pivoted near one end of the diametral wall of the disc 12 and under the action of centrifugal force arising from rotation of the disc 12 by the safety line (not shown) swings outwardly against the opposing force of a spring (not shown) to abut one of the inwardly extending bosses 14, 14a provided on the disc 13. The disc 13 is immediately rotated and one of the externally mounted studs 15, 15a abuts the head of a brake actuating rod 17. The rod 17 displaces a ball cage 7 and the balls 8 run along the conical face of a wedge 18 to move radially inwards and grip the line.
