Abstract

1,125,905. Paper-making. TIME Inc. 29 Oct.. 1965 [29 Oct., 1964], No. 45946/65. Heading D2A. In a paper-making machine in which a web is formed between two wires 26, 28, means are provided to cause the web to follow one of the wires when the wires separate, with the other wire being free of restraint at the point of separation of the wires. The means may be a suction roll 50 as shown, or roll 50 may be omitted and roll 54 made a blow roll. There is an inner wire 30-for example of nyloninside wire 26. Suction box 32 has an arcuate surface 33 which may be part of a circle, parabola, hyperbola, or a sine wave. Suction box 32 is divided up into zones of increasing degrees of suction in the downstream direction. Surface 33 is formed by slats which may extend transversely, or which may be comprised of two groups of parallel slats, each group extending substantially longitudinally but slightly and oppositely angled thereto. The latter form of surface 33 may be moulded and covered with silicon carbide, polished to a mirror-like finish.
