Abstract

Glycol esters of terephthalic acid are obtained by reacting an excess of glycol with the acid, the excess of glycol being derived from reflux in a rectifying column attached to the esterification, reactor and recycled to the reaction mixture. The terephthalic acid used may contain up to 20% of isophthalic acid. Suitable glycols are, for example, ethylene glycol, butylene glycol, hexanediol and dimethanol cyclohexane. An esterification catalyst, e.g. litharge, zinc acetate, manganese acetate or calcium acetate may be present.
