Abstract

1,120,824. Air cushion vehicles. BRITISH HOVERCRAFT CORP. Ltd. 11 Oct., 1966 [2 Nov., 1965], No. 46392/65. Heading B7K. A vehicle, which may operate either as an air cushion vehicle, a displacement craft or as a wheeled land vehicle comprises a buoyant body 1 having a space 2 for passengers and freight with a bow loading door/ramp 4, a ontrol cabin 8 that may be hinged upwardly or sideways to facilitate loading through door 4, a lift fan 20 and propulsion propeller jointly or selectively driven from engine 12, a skirting assembly 30 comprising an upper pressurized part 15 and lower segments 16 capable of being extended as shown in Fig. 4 or retracted by tension cords 18 and a framework 21. For land operation wheels 9, 10 are provided respectively steerable and driven by motor 13, the steerable wheels serving also to assist an aerodynamic rudder for steering in the displacement craft mode, wherein propulsion may be by air propeller or a retractable water propeller. The shock absorbers for the front wheels may retract to facilitate loading through door 4 and the engine/propeller unit may be tilted downwardly at the rear to reduce the height for operation as a wheeled vehicle.
