Abstract
1,111,674. Electromagnetic stirring. PENNSALT CHEMICALS CORPORATION. 18 Aug., 1965 [15 Sept., 1964], No. 3547/65. Heading B1C. A stirrer comprises a plurality of spaced coils mounted within a shell 52 of a thermal shock resistant, heat and electrically insulating material, the shell enveloping the coils which are connected to a multiphase supply. Four coils 56, 58, 60, 62 their centres along the vertical axis of the shell 52, which may be of silica, graphite or ceramics, the coils 56, 60 being oppositely poled to each other and both connected to one phase of a 2-phase supply, coils 58, 62 being similarly connected to the second phase so that the magnetic field advances progressively through the molten metal 42. The shell is cast about a liner 54, e.g. of non- magnetic steel, constituting a former for the coils. The stirrer is fitted to the lid 16 of a vacuum chamber 12 and immersed in a ladle 36 of metal to be degassed. Another embodiment shows the shell and coils suspended in a ladle from an overhead crane. The shell may be cylindrical or tapered and may carry water cooling coils. The electric supply frequency may vary between 0.1 and 60 c.p.s.
