Abstract
A phenol, obtained by the partial oxidation of a secondary alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon followed by acid-catalysed cleavage of the hydroperoxide formed, is freed at least partially from carbonyl compounds which are present as impurity by neutralizing the cleavage reaction mixture, separating from the neutralized mixture a fraction containing the phenol and carbonyl impurities, heating this fraction with water or steam in contact with a strongly acid cation exchange resin containing free phosphoric, phosphonic, sulphuric or sulphonic acid groups, thus converting the carbonyl compounds to compounds having lower boiling points and separating these compounds from the phenol. The process is particularly applicable to the purification of phenol itself but may also be used for the purification of other phenols, e.g. those obtained by the acid-catalysed cleavage of the hydroperoxides of o-isopropyltoluene, m-isopropyltoluene, p-isopropyltoluene, p-diisopropylbenzene, sec.-butylbenzene and b -isopropylnaphthalene.
