An overedge chain stitch seam is formed by passing at least a first needle thread through the work material at spaced points to form a first sequence of chain stitches, and simultaneously passing at least a second needle thread through the work material at points spaced from the points of penetration of the first needle thread and longitudinally aligned therewith to form a second sequence of chain stitches which overlies the first sequence to form a single seam. The conventional overedge sewing machine shown in Fig. 1 is modified to produce the seam by mounting on the needle carrier 6 two needles 5, 13 spaced in the line of stitching and providing corresponding under loopers 7, 14 and overedge loopers (9), (15). The seam shown in Fig. 4 comprises two single-thread type 501 seams, Fig. 5, shows two threethread type 504 seams, Fig. 6 shows a single-thread type 501 seam and a twothread type 502 seam, Fig. 7 shows two type 502 seams, Fig. 8 shows two three-thread type 503 seams, Fig. 9 shows a type 501 seam and a type 504 -seam, Fig. 10 shows two singlethread crochet-type seams, and Fig. 11 shows two two-thread type 510 seams.
