Abstract
1,107,601. Automatic circuit breakers. HONEYWELL Inc. 31 March, 1965 [12 May, 1964], No. 13734/65. Heading H1N. An electrothermally released switch which is closed by a push-button 70 has a resilient bridging contact member 63 loosely mounted in a carrier 45 slidable with respect to fixed contacts 50, 51. When push-button 70 is depressed it first drives the contact 63 to the bottom of its carrier 45, cam portions 64, 65 of the carrier lifting the ends of contact 63 away from the fixed contacts, and then forces the carrier 45 downwards to be latched by the free end of a bimetal 20, 21. Subsequent release of the button 70 permits contact 63 to rise in the carrier 45, its ends springing outwards to engage the fixed contacts. If bimetal 20, 21 is then bent due to heating by a resistor 32, the latch is released and carrier 45 rises, contact 63 sliding away from the fixed contacts to open the circuit. The switch cannot be held closed since whenever pressure is applied to the pushbutton, contact 63 is lifted away from the fixed contacts. The leg 20 of the bimetal is supported by a deformable support 23 (Fig. 1, not shown) whose position can be adjusted by a screw 25 and this leg serves for ambient temperature compensation since it is largely isolated from the effect of resistor 32 by means of a perforation 42. Auxiliary printed contacts 85, 90, 91 (Fig. 2, not shown) are engageable by a sliding contact 80 attached to carrier 45.
