Abstract
A substrate carries a continuous polycrystalline film, less than 5 m thick, of an alkali metal tungsten bronze, i.e. the compounds Mx WO3 where is 0 < x < 1 and M is an alkali metal. The film may be formed by coating a substrate, e.g. by spinning, brushing or rolling, with a soln. of an inorganic salt of an acid of tungsten and an inorganic alkali metal compound, and firing in a reducing atmosphere, e.g. N2/H2, at above 400 DEG C. The salt may be an ammonium or an alkali metal o-, m- or p-tungstate, and the alkali metal compound may be MNO3, MNO2, M2CO3, MOH or a tungstate. Mixed alkali metal tungsten bronzes e.g. Li0.3Na0.3 WO3 may be formed by using compounds of two alkali metals. It is stated that in some of the bronzes, part of the alkali metal may be present as another crystal phase or as the free metal in the film. The substrate may be glass or an electrically insulating material.ALSO:A substrate carries a continuous polycrystalline film, less than 5m thick, of an alkali metal tungsten bronze, i.e. the compounds MxWO3, where is 0< x <1 and M is an alkali metal. The substrate may be glass or an electrically insulating material, e.g. a glass-ceramic or ceramic material.
