Abstract

1,101,889. Fibreboard drums; container closures. MARTIN FERREY Ltd. 16 Dec., 1966, No. 56458/66. Headings B8D and B8T. A drum is formed by winding convolutely a sheet of corrugated fibreboard, securing the ends 2, 3 only of the sheet, e.g. by means of adhesive tapes 4, 5 respectively, to form a body 1, and fitting end closures 10, 20. The closures may be identical, or vary as shown in Fig. 1. Each closure has a plug portion 11 or 24; the closure 20, including a cover 21 with a skirt 23 adhered, taped or stitched to the body 1. The plug 24, initially not adhered to the cover 21, is inserted from inside the body 1 after the cover 21 is fitted. Similarly, the plug 11 is inserted before a cover 12 is applied, and may be formed with a filling opening provided with a plug. When end closures 10 are fitted at both ends, their flanges 13 serve as rolling rings. The flanges may have cut-outs 14 for holding straps applied round the drum. The plug 11 may be formed of from two to six layers of corrugated fibreboard; and the end closures as a whole may be moulded from synthetic resin sheet. The fibreboard may be wax impregnated. A plastics liner 30, for use with flowable contents, may be emptied through an aperture in the drum, lines of weakness being provided to form the aperture either in an end closure or in the body 1.
