Abstract

1,199,145. Variable-speed gear. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 30 Aug., 1967 [2 Sept., 1966], No. 39329/66. Heading F2D. A transmission between an engine 10 and an electric generator 12, which may operate as a motor to start the engine, consists of a variablespeed friction gear 14 in combination with a three-element planetary gear and incorporating oppositely acting sprag clutches 16A, 16B on the engine shaft 28 and connected to the planetary and friction gears respectively. Friction gear 14 may de of the type described in Specification 1,146,323 comprising two sets of tiltable idler rollers 64 between outer and central toric discs 60A, 60B and 62, disc 60B being mounted in a cylinder 74 to which pressure liquid is supplied to maintain the drive, while disc 62 is capable of axial equalising movement. The sun gear 18 of the planetary gear is integral with the friction gear shaft 26 and the ring gear 20 is connected to clutch 16A. The carrier 24 for the planets 22 is formed with a pinion 38 meshing with a pinion 36 on a layshaft 32 connected to the generator shaft 30 through pinions 40, 34, 42. With generator 12 operating as a motor to start engine 10 the planet carrier 24 is rotated by layshaft assembly 32 and friction gear 14 is set to a high output ratio so that ring gear 20 is prevented from rotating. To run the engine up to speed the friction gear ratio is reduced to progressively increase the speed of ring gear 20 which drives the engine shaft 28 through clutch 16A, the other clutch 16B overrunning. When the engine starts to run under its own power clutch 16A enables it to overrun ring gear 20 and drive is then transmitted through clutch 16B and friction gear 14 to generator 12, the layshaft assembly 32 idling. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the layshaft assembly is replaced by idler pinions (50) driven by a central pinion (54) on an extension (56) of the generator shaft 30.
