Abstract

1,185,508. Hoses. UNIROYAL Ltd. 6 Sept., 1968 [14 Sept., 1967], No. 41907/67. Heading F2P. A hose which is capable of floating when filled with water has a body which is reinforced by a helically extending member 11 of glass fibre, adjacent turns of the helix being separated by a helically extending elastomeric member 10, and the glass fibre and elastomeric members 11, 10 being substantially of the same width radially of the hose and lying within a common layer of the hose. As shown, a layer 4 of rubber is first applied to a mandrel and over the ribs 3 of a nipple 1 made of resin bonded glass fibre, followed by a rubber-impregnated textile material ply 5 and an even number of layers of rubber-coated glass fibre cord 6 with alternate layers wound in opposite directions. The nipple 1 is then bound into the hose by winding, under high tension, two glass fibre tapes 7, after which a further rubber layer and breaker ply 8 is applied before the hose is partly vulcanized. A further layer 9 of rubber is cemented on to the hose and then the elastomeric and glass fibre strips 10, 11 respectively are wound helically on to the layer 9. The glass fibre strips may be of glass fibre filaments cured in resin, and twisted to form an elongated bundle, or by a number of plies of tape, or cloth, woven or otherwise formed unidirectional glass rovings dipped in resin and set to the intermediate cure stage, or by bunching together unidirectional rovings in resin and passing them, through a hot die, to mould them to the required crosssectional shape. On top of this latter layer further layers of rubber, breaker ply, and a final outer covering of rubber, indicated together as 12, are applied before the hose is finally vulcanized.
