Abstract

1,184,560. Safety brakes for lift cages. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CONSTRUCTION CO. Ltd. 22 Sept., 1967 [23 Sept., 1966], No. 42561/66. Heading B8L. [Also in Division F2] A safety brake mounted on a cradle or hoist frame for operation on a rope 16 associated therewith has a fixed shoe 4 and a movable shoe 8 secured to a wedge 7 which co-operates with ball or roller bearings 5, 6 on spindles journalled in a brake support frame 1, 2. Pneumatic piston-cylinders 14 are actuated to act on a wedge cross pin 12 to move the brake shoe 8 in a direction so that the rope is gripped between the two shoes either by manual or automatic operation of a pneumatic control valve. The shoes can be clamped on the rope by operation of hand-wheel 21 on the threaded spindle 20, the pin 12 on the wedge moving in elongated slots of the piston-rods. After operation of the brake the pistons and wedge are returned by springs 24, 25. The bearings 5, 6 may be replaced by balls or rollers on the surface of the wedge or the surface of a support engaging the wedge. The brake can operate on the hoist cable itself or a guide rope and can be used on a guide rope for a mast, the brake in this case having two sheaves 18 which run on the rope and serve as a link between the cradle and guide rope. Both shoes may be movable.
