Abstract

1,183,907. Photographic silver materials and development processes. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Sept. 27, 1968 [Sept. 28, 1967], No.45959/68. Heading G2C. A negative silver image of increased covering power is obtained by developing an exposed photographic material containing a light-sensitive silver compound in the presence of a dicyanimide of the formula A-N(CN) 2 where A is hydrogen or another atom or a group. The dicyanimide may be present in a silver halide emulsion layer as silver dicyanimide which may partly or completely replace the silver halide as the light-sensitive salt, or it may be present in the silver halide developer as sodium, potasium, lithium or ammonium dicyanimide. Electrically conducting positive silver images are obtained by developing an exposed silver halide material in a developer containing a dicyanimide at a pH of at least 11, a shiny metallic image being formed in the unexposed areas in addition to an ordinary silver image in the exposed areas. A positive silver image is also obtained by a silver salt diffusion process in which an exposed silver halide material is developed with a low-solvent developer containing a dicyanimide but no conventional silver halide solvent such as sodium thiosulphate, and brought into contact with a nuclei-containing receiving sheet. Alternatively a diffusion image is obtained by a process in which an exposed material containing silver dicyanimide as the light-sensitive compound is developed with a lowsolvent developer and contacted with a nucleated receiving sheet. Light-sensitive silver dicyanimide emulsions are made by mixing solutions of sodium dicyanimide and silver nitrate in the presence of gelatine and mixed emulsions of silver dicyanimide and silver halide are made by mixing the pre-prepared emulsions.
