Abstract
1,183,822. Vibratory finishing. SWECO Inc. 25 April, 1967 [4 May, 1966], No. 19653/66. Heading B3D. A vibratory finishing mill comprises: (i) a base; (ii) a container for receiving media and parts to be finished, said container forming a channel; (iii) means for resiliently mounting said container on said base; (iv) vibratory means for imparting relatively high frequency vibrations to said container; and (v) a weir located in said container and forming a wall therein, the weir having a height less than the depth of said channel, extending completely across the width of said channel and being vertically disposed within said channel. The following alternatives are mentioned: (a) the weir may be a permanent, internally mounted fabrication; (b) the weir may be of a composite design with a movable or retractable component held within an internally mounted fabrication which extends permanently for some distance into the finishing vessel; (c) the entire weir may be removed and inserted from the top of the opening finishing vessel; (d) the weir may be introduced through a slot in either side of the finishing vessel; (e) the weir may be introduced from the bottom of the bowl and be partially or fully retractable; it may be hinged and retained within the finishing vessel and elevated by manual, air or mechanical means to operating position; the finishing vessel may be slotted in the bottom and the weir operated by air, mechanical or manual means to attain proper position. A tub 12, Fig. 1, supported by springs 11 on a base 10 is vibrated by an electric motor 13 having dissimilar eccentric weights 14, 15 on the ends of its shaft. The tub contains deburring media 16 and workpieces. A weir 17 is placed across one end of the tub, the contents flowing thereover into the discharge section 19 and being recycled to the other end. If the workpieces are completely finished in a single pass through the tub, a screen separator or magnetic drum may be used to separate the workpieces from the media, only the latter being recycled. Alternatively the weir may be inserted only after the finishing vibration has been applied for a required time. An annular tub 20, Fig. 3, having a centre post 21 is supported by springs 25 on a base frame 26 and is vibrated by a unit 22 with eccentric weights 23, 24. A weir 27 is provided; as the contents process round the tub they flow over the weir, where finished workpieces may be separated from media. In a modification, Fig. 4, the tub 30 has a wide diameter centre post 31 housing the top portion of the vibrator unit 32; a weir 33 is provided. A finishing chamber 50, Fig. 6, is in the form of an ascending helix mounted round a central column 51. Workpieces and media fed to the portion 52 precess up the helix and flow over the weir 53. A screen member may be mounted horizontally for co-operation with the weir.
