Abstract

1,183,468. Die-casting machines. INTERNATIONAL LEAD ZINC RESEARCH ORGANIZATION Inc. 7 June, 1967 [30 June, 1966], No. 26311/67. Heading B3F. In a die-casting process the die cavity, vents and runners are purged with a suitable gas to remove air therefrom, the said gas combining with the subsequently injected molten metal to produce pore-free castings. The term " suitable gas " is defined as any gas which combines with the molten and solidified metal by mechanical, physical or chemical means within the die cavity and results in the disappearance of the gas. The gas may combine to form products which are soluble in both the molten and solidified metal or which can be randomly dispersed throughout the solidifying metal without adversely affecting the quality of the casting. The gas may be oxygen, chlorine or bromine or a vapour of zinc, aluminium or magnesium. The molten metal may be zinc, aluminium, magnesium, tin or brass or an alloy containing these metals. The gas may be provided through a supply line to the vents, runners and die cavity at a higher than ambient pressure, or the die may be operated in a sealed enclosure containing the reactive gas.
