Abstract
1,176,627. Fluid springs. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. 2 Feb., 1968, No. 5378/68. Heading F2S. In a vehicle suspension strut employing a gas spring, the spring rate is automatically modified according to the load by changing the effective gas volume. The strut consists of a piston and cylinder and the gas is contained in three chambers, viz. the cylinder space A on one side of the piston, a space B within the piston and a reservoir 25 outside the cylinder. The means for changing the effective gas volume is a sliding valve element 37 which, as the piston advances, can isolate space B and/or reservoir 25 from the cylinder space A. Under light loads the gas spring comprises all three chambers. As the piston 15 moves further in, the valve element 37 engages opening 42 and isolates chamber 25. Further compression causes valve 37 to slide, against spring 40, through guide 30 and break the alignment of groove 38 with groove 32 to isolate chamber B. The tube 31 is present to prevent a build up in chamber B of valve-lubricating oil from chamber A. Damping is obtained by oil flow between chambers 18 and 19 via bore 21 and a damping valve 20.
