Abstract
1,176,598. Selective printers. ING. C. OLIVETTI & C., S.p.A. 21 Oct., 1968 [16 Nov., 1967], No. 49909/68. Heading B6F. Line-spacing, variable and fractional.-In a selective printer having a fixed platen 6 and a type carriage 8 movable along the platen, the line-spacing arrangement for rotating the platen shaft comprises a differential having a planet gear 13 and two sun gears 21 and 22, the planet gear being arranged to rotate the platen shaft 7. At least one of the sun gears is coupled to a motor-driven shaft by a clutch, which when engaged, causes the sun gear to rotate through a predetermined angle. In Fig. 1, two 90 degree cycle clutches 31 and 36 are mounted on a continuously motor-driven shaft 29. Two electromagnets 71 and 74 release respectively the detents (64, Fig. 2) of each clutch to allow one or other or both clutches to rotate respective gears 27 and 33. Gear 27 of clutch 31 drives sun gear 21 via gear 26 and sleeve 23 rotatable on a shaft 16, with a 2 : 1 ratio. Similarly, gear 33 of clutch 26 drives sun gear 22 with a 1 : 1 ratio. The planet gear 13 is mounted on a shaft 14, pinned to shaft 16, which drives the platen roller via gears 17, 18 and 19. Clutch 31 provides a one line-space feed, clutch 36 provides a two line-space feed. Both clutches operated together provide a three line-space feed. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5, the planet gear 78 is mounted on a shaft 77 pinned directly on the platen roller shaft 76. Only sun gear 79 is driven by a motor via a part revolution clutch 86 driving a worm wheel 82. The other sun gear 81 is connected to a milled knob 87 for rotating the platen manually to provide fractional spacing. The milled knob 87 is connected by means of a friction clutch 91 to a gear 89 normally held stationary by a spring-loaded detent roller 88. Axially movable push-button 92 disengages the clutch 91 from the gear 89, thereby allowing milled knob 87 to rotate the platen 6.
