Abstract

1,169,797. Cables. VEREINIGTEN DRAHTUND KABELWERKE A.G. 15 Feb., 1967 [17 Feb., 1966; 27 April, 1966; 17 Dec., 1966; 19 Dec., 1966], No. 7273/67. Heading H1A. A telecommunications cable having a foamed plastics filler around its insulated cores to exclude moisture is laid up at a head 2 at which insulated conductors 1 and the components of the filler are supplied. Pipes 4 and 5 may supply to nozzle 3 a liquid plastics material or the components of a plastics former, both containing a blowing agent and the foam (such as a polyurethane formed from a poly ether and an isocyanate) is produced beneath insulation 6 after a suitable delay. The filler may take the form of spaced plugs at regular intervals along the length of the cable and may also be located between layers of sheathing. One or more of the components of the plastics former may be supplied in microcapsules which are later destroyed by applied heat or pressure to release the component/s beneath the insulation 6 which may be a non-resilient plastics foil such as a polyester foil. The cores (11) (Fig. 2, not shown) of insulated conductors 1 may be insulated by extruded polyethylene with colour coding applied to the surface of the insulation over which a transparent casing is applied. The casing may be formed from powdered polyethylene, electrostatically distributed before sintering.
