Abstract

1,166,709. Heat-treating cast iron. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd. Dec.15, 1967 [Dec.15, 1966], No.57138/67. Heading C7A. An austenitic spheroidal graphite cast iron casting containing by weight:- such that the sum % Cr + (0.7 x %Mo) + (0À5 x %W) = 0À2 to 2À5, Mg up to 0À15%, Cu 0 to 6%, with, if Cu present, a rare earth metal, Fe and impurities as balance, is heated at 870-982‹ C. for 1-4 hours, cooled to room temperature and then refrigerated at -40 to -100‹C. for at least 1 hour, e.g. in a solid CO 2 - alcohol bath, to produce a martensitic structure, and re-heated to at least 593‹C. e.g. up to 870‹C., to re-austenitise the iron, for improving the strength of the casting. The composition of the iron and the refrigeration temperature are correlated by a specified formula. The iron castings are useful for ship board fittings, turbine castings, pump casings and impellers, valves and pipe joints, and diesel engine cylinder liners.
