Abstract

1,162,702. Alloy powder granules; powder metallurgy. HOGANAS-BILLESHOLMS A. B. Sept.7, 1966 [Sept. 14, 1965], No.40046/66. Headings C7A and C7D. Alloy powder granules for use in powder metallurgy are made by heating in a reducing atmosphere at a temperature below the melting point but high enough to cause pre-alloying, an unalloyed mixture of Fe powder, a Mo compound, Cu or a Cu compound, and Ni or a Ni compound, discontinuing the heating before complete alloying occurs and grinding the agglomerated particles. The mixture is preferably heated in dissociated ammonia or hydrogen at 1300‹ -1850‹ F. and the ground particles are preferably annealed at about 1350‹ F. The mixture may also contain polyvinyl alcohol, gums or starch as a binder and about 0À5% of graphite or stearic acid. The following compounds may be used; nickel glyaxine, nickel nitrate, nickel formate, ammonium molybdate, molybdenum nitrate, molybdenum trioxide, molybdic acid, copper oxide, copper formate and copper nitrate. The mixture may be formed from the dry powders or by mixing Fe powder with an aqueous solution of the salts of the other metals. The alloy powders produced contain 1À5-3% Ni, 0À4-1% Mo, 0À5-2% Cu, balance Fe. The granules have a very low shrinkage on compacting and sintering.
