Abstract

1,162,198. Lubricants. J. R. GEIGY A.-G. 7 March, 1968 [8 March, 1967], No. 11136/68. Heading C5F. [Also in Division C3] Oil compositions comprise a minor proportion of a pour-point lowering and viscosity index improving additive which is a mixture of (A) a random copolymer of at least one C 2-6 α-olefin and at least one higher C 4-25 α-olefin, said copolymer having a molecular weight of 50,000 to 3,000,000 and an X-ray crystallinity of 10 to 50%, and (B) a polymer of at least one C 8-20 α-olefin, said polymer having an intrinsic viscosity in cyclohexane at 25‹ C. of 0À5 to 5À0 dl./g. and an X-ray crystallinity of 0 to 10%. The oil may be a hydrocarbon or high molecular weight ester oil, and the additive may be incorporated as a concentrate in a compatible carrier, e.g. a naphthenic base oil. Examples describe the addition to hydrocarbon lubricating oils of additives comprising C 11-14 /C 14-18 olefin copolymers and (1) propylene/butene/C 6-10 /C 6-14 /C 14-18 olefin copolymers, and (2 and 3) propylene/butene/ C 14-16 olefin copolymers; C 11-14 /C 15-18 olefin copolymers and (4) propylene/butene copolymer, (5) propylene/butene/C 11-18 olefin copolymer and (6) propylene/butene/C 6-10 olefin copolymer; and propylene/butene/C 14-16 olefin copolymers and (7) polymers of olefin mixtures of average number of carbon atoms 12À55 to 14À50, and (8) a C 11-18 olefin copolymer.
