A prefabricated expansion joint comprises two linear members 1, 2 having opposed parallel faces, .the. upper part of the space between them being filled with mastic 3. The linear members may be steel angles with straps 9, 10 for subsequent embodiment in poured concrete 11, 12. The joint is manufactured by spacing the angles with foam plastic 4, pouring the mastic and allowing it .to cure and later installing the joint over a fibrous cellulose strip 6 already embedded between base layers 7, 8 of a road or like surface.
