Abstract

1,156,743. Cooling discharge tubes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO. Ltd. 2 Dec., 1966 [15 Feb., 1966], No. 6595/66. Heading F4U. [Also in Division H1] In a vapour cooled electric discharge tube in which a heated structural part 1 having cooling channels 2 is, in use, immersed for most of its length in liquid in a boiler 7 so that liquid in the channels evaporates and is ejected from the channels and passes out through an exit pipe 9, a plurality of teeth or vanes 10 are mounted at an angle in the path of the ejected vapour and liquid between the ends of the cooling channels 2 and the exit pipe 9 such that a rotary or swirling motion is imparted to the ejected vapour and liquid causing most of the ejected liquid to be deflected away from the mouth of the exit pipe. The teeth or vanes 10 may be in the form of a swirl ring, Fig. 2 (not shown), and, as shown in Fig. 1, are attached to the discharge device near the end of anode 1, and a perforate open-ended cylinder 17 coaxially surrounding anode 1 traps liquid particles and facilitates their return to the reservoir, whose level is indicated at W. A gutter 14 having an open-ended perforate cylinder 12 which extends into the exit pipe may also be provided, with a pipe 15 to return collected fluid to the reservoir. Furthermore a number of swirl vanes 16 may be fitted under the top of the boiler to assist in providing the rotary motion of the liquid and vapour, which may be water and steam.
