In a motor vehicle hand brake structure the hand brake includes a hollow rod 5 slidable in a casing 1 fixed to the lower surface dashboard 3 of a motor vehicle, a handle 15 being fixed to and projecting transversely from the rod 5 and being rigid in normal use but, upon a severe impact such as occurs in an accident, the handle is bendable at a point close to the rod into a position approximately parallel with the rod (see Fig. 6), a trigger 36 being mounted in the handle 15 and movable into a position to release a ratchet (not shown) to permit the rod 5 to move from the position in which the brake is engaged to a position in which the brake is disengaged. The handle includes a steel frame 17 bent at an intermediate position 19 to form outer and inner limbs 21 which are generally parallel with each other and the free ends 25 and 27 of the limbs are parallel to and welded to the opposite surfaces of the rod 5. The inner limb 22 has in its handle part 31 corrugations 33 to accommodate the fingers of the driver and a decorative cover 49 bonded to the handle frames 17. The trigger 36 is mounted on an arm 43 pivoted on a roller pivot 35. If the driver is flung against the hand brake in the event of an accident the frame 17 bends resiliently at the point 53 between the free end 27 and 31 of the inner limb while the metal of the outer limb 21 stretches and the frame 17 assumes the shape shown in Fig. 6.
