Abstract

1,152,629. Making self-locking fasteners; rolling threads. E. G. GABBEY. 20 Oct., 1967, No. 47916/67. Headings B3A and B3M. [Also in Division F2] A self-locking helically threaded metal fastener is provided with truncated intermediate thread turns of a pitch diameter different from that of adjoining thread turns, all the thread turns having flat flanks, in cross-section. The truncated turns provide a friction locking arrangement between the fastener and a fastener having a co-operating threaded portion of form corresponding to the non-truncated turns. The fastener may be formed by modifying some of the turns of a uniformly threaded fastener using two or more rotatable dies (21, 22) (Fig. 2, not shown), or flat dies, or using in conjunction with a die 43 a pressure roller 42 which is arranged to press on a portion of the thread of the fastener. Alternatively, the fastener may be formed by dies (31, 32) (Fig. 4, not shown) which have portions (31a, 32b) specially shaped to form the truncated thread turns. The thread formation is such that the cross-sectional area of each of the truncated thread turns is substantially equal to that of each of the other turns and that the slopes of all the thread flanks are identical.
