1,150,416. Measuring corrosion rate electrically. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. July 19, 1967 [July 29, 1966], No.34157/66. Heading G1N. In the measurement of the rate of corrosion of a metal in a corrosive liquid using the Stern- Geary equation corrosion current = 1/2.3 À 1/R p À #a.#c/#a+#c where #a and #c are constants given by the Tafel slopes of the anodic and cathodic polarization curves, the polarization resistence R p is measured by applying squarewave pulses from a multivibrator between an auxiliary electrode, e.g. of platinum gauze, Fig.1, and a test electrode of the metal, e.g. 1 sq. cm. of aluminium brass, and measuring the voltage across a standard resistance Rg in series with the electrodes and the voltage between the test electrode and a saturated calomel reference electrode. The squarewave generator consists of a transistorized flip-flop oscillator with one or more emitter followers. The measured voltages may be displayed one by each beam of a double beam oscilloscope, or, after amplification, by high input impedance meters. The cell may be used for measuring the corrosivity of seawater or in conjunction with controls for inhibitor injection into heat exchanger cooling systems.
