Abstract

1,149,909. Emergency seals. SOC. DES FORGES ET ATELIERS DU CREUSOT. 22 Sept., 1966 [22 Sept., 1965], No. 42296/66. Heading F2B. In a hydro-electric unit an emergency seal for use when the main shaft seal 3 is being repaired or replaced is located between the main seal 3 and the turbine rotor 2 and comprises a ring 10, Fig. 2, secured to a flexible diaphragm 12 and having a gasket 11 which is normally spaced from a bearing surface 14 rigid with the turbine shaft 1, means being provided to move the ring axially when required so that the gasket 11 sealingly contacts the surface 14. The diaphragm 12 is connected to a part 13 which is secured to the casing wall 7 and acts as a guide and a stop for the ring 10. Rods 18 connected to the ring 10 carry pistons 19 of actuators 20 operable to close or open the emergency seal by hydraulic pressure controlled by a distributer 25 which connects passages 26 and 27 leading to the actuators with either a pressure oil feed 30 or a drain 31. Springs 21 bias the pistons 19 in the sense of opening the emergency seal and nuts 23 on the ends 22 of the rods 18 are adapted to co-operate with surfaces 24 to lock the emergency seal in its closed position; nuts 23 may also be used to close the seal manually. The enclosure 8 between the seals may be connected, to drain 33 or to the turbine inlet water pipe 9 by a three way cock 32, which may be coupled with the distributer 25, a slight delay being arranged so that the emergency seal is closed before the enclosure 8 is opened to drain.
