Abstract

1,149,617. Turbo-charged I. C. engines. BURMEISTER & WAIN'S MASKIN - og SKIBSBYGGERI. April 26, 1966 [April 29, 1965], No.18283/66. Heading F1B. In a two-stroke I. C. engine in which the exhaust gases are led through a first turbine to an exhaust receiver and from thence to a second turbine, the turbines driving compressors which supply a scavenging air receiver, the dimensions of the turbines and the timing of the engine exhaust and scavenging valves are chosen such that, during normal engine operation, the super-atmospheric pressure in the exhaust receiver lies between one half and one quarter of that in the scavenging air receiver and the super-atmospheric pressure in the scavenging air receiver is at least one third as high again as the minimum super-atmospheric pressure reached in each of the engine cylinders during the period between closing of the associated scavenging and exhaust valves. "Super-atmospheric pressure" means the pressure above atmospheric pressure. As shown, the exhaust gases from cylinder groups 1-3 and 4-7 respectively drive turbines 10 and 12, which exhaust into receiver 14. Gases from receiver 14 drive a turbine 16, which in turn drives a compressor 17. The latter delivers compressed air via coolers 18, further compressors 11 and 13 and cooler 19 to the engine scavenging air receiver 20.
