1,148,661. Chromatographic separation. V. PRETORIOUS and H. H. HAHN. 9 May, 1966 [11 May, 1965], No. 20366/66. Headings BIL and B1X. To hasten separation in chromatography separating processes taking place in a tubular passage and involving the use of a retarding phase and a material forwarding phase, where the material to be separated is phase interchange between the phases, the forwarding phase is maintained in turbulent flow and the contribution to the efficiency of the column by the retarding phase is maintained low by employing a retarding phase in which the material exchange is confined to the immediate vicinity of the surface. The retarding phase may be a solid non-porous absorbent, e.g. metal and glass, or porous substances devoid of blind pores, e.g. activated charcoal, alumina, silica gel, molecular sieves and organic polymers, or thin liquid films on solid particles or on supports, or thin layers of ion exchangers. The turbulent flow may be assisted by providing obstructions within the column or by vibrating the column. In the apparatus of Fig. 3 the retarding phase consists of particulate material maintained in an expanded state in a column 11 by the upward turbulent flow of a forwarding phase entering through inlet 12. One desired fraction leaves the column together with the forwarding phase at 23 while the other desired fraction is withdrawn with the retarding phase at 15 and is stripped off the retarding phase in column 17 by the upward flow of a stripping medium. The retarding phase tends to settle at the top of column 17 and from there returns by gravity via standpipe 21 to column 11. In Fig. 4, the column is divided transversely by screens permeable to the forwarding phase into sections of height equal to the column diameter such that the particulate material in each section is in turbulent condition but is maintained within that section.
