Abstract

1,147,540. Threitol and erythritol and their dicarbamates and cyclic dicarbonates. W. R. GRACE & CO. 19 April, 1966, No. 17170/66. Heading C2C. The dicarbonates of DL-threitol and erythritol are prepared by heating DL-butadiene dioxide or meso-butadiene dioxide, respectively, with carbon dioxide. The compounds undergo the following reactions: (a) hydrolysis with aqueous bases to give threitol or erythritol; (b) reaction with ammonia to give DL-threitol- or erythritol- 1,4 dicarbamate; (c) pyrolysis with elimination of CO 2 to give a product containing carbonate groups.
