Abstract

1,147,114. Heat-treating filaments. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 25 Sept., 1967 [23 Sept., 1966], No. 43552/67. Heading B5B A tow of filaments of a synthetic polymer is passed through a treatment zone in which the tow is supported by an upward current of a hot gas, the tow extending freely between supply and withdrawal means and the rate of supply and withdrawal being such, in relation to the temperature of the hot gas, that the filaments undergo thermal shrinkage in substantially tensionless condition. The gas may be air, steam or nitrogen, and suitably has a velocity of 0À2-6 m./sec., to support a tow of filaments of density 1000-30,000 denier/cm. The gas is suitably passed to the tow through a perforated plate, lattice or fabric. Examples show the treatment of polyethylene terephthate; polyolefines, polyamides and polyacrylonitrile are also specified. Suitable apparatus is illustrated (Fig. 1, not shown) wherein hot air is recycled in a closed system through a glass-fibre fabric on to a moving tow of filaments passing through a horizontal passageway.
