Abstract

1,145,911. Sizing and cooling extrudates. STAMICARBON N.V. 11 Aug., 1966 [13 Aug., 1965], No. 36057/66. Heading B5A. A tube 6 of thermoplastics material, e.g. low pressure polyethylene, is extruded through a cooled sizing die 7, 8, the outer surface of the tube being kept in contact therewith by air or inert gas pressure admitted via conduit 9, and the arrangement is such that the tube leaves die 7, 8 with its outer surface cooled below the softening point of the material while its inner surface is still at a temperature above this point. Thereafter the tube surface temperatures are allowed to equalize essentially by heat flow from the inner to the outer surface and on equalization the tube is cooled to ambient temperature by passage through a cooling bath 11. A temperature-time diagram is given, Fig. 2 (not shown), where (K) and (N) represent the first and second forced cooling stages respectively, (E) the equalization stage and curves (A) and (B) correspond to the inner and outer surfaces respectively.
