Granular particles are spread on a cellulose sheet for forming a cigarette filter by apparatus comprising a rotarydisc provided at its periphery with a succession of receptacles of equal capacity, means for continuously supplying the granules to the receptacles successively at a given angular position of the disc, means for removing the granules from the receptacles successively at another angular position, and means for directing the driven granules on to the sheet. As shown, the disc for metering the granules ' comprises a flange 21 rotated with a horizontal shaft 22, an annular member 23 separated from flange 21 by radial bars 24 and a cylinrical mesh 25 located at the base of bars 24, and annular bars 28, 29 interconnecting the bars 24. The spaces 'between the successive bars 24 constitute rectangular receptacles of equal capacity. The receptacles are filled in succession by granules.. flowing continuously from a spout 5, the filled receptacles are successively levelled by air discharged from a nozzle 30 across the rim of the disc, and air discharged from a radially-disposed nozzle 13 drives the contents of each successive filled receptacle into a duct 12 adapted to deposit the granules either on to the centre of a travelling sheet, or on to a horizontal rotary disc which distributes the granules by centrifugal action across the entire width of the sheet. In a modification the disc rotates about a vertical axis, and the receptacles are constituted by a pair of peripheral concentric walls interconnected by radial bars and a perforated bottom, the contents of the filled receptacles being discharged successively into a vertical duct by a vertically-disposed air nozzle. In a further modification the disc rotates about a vertical axis, and radial walls extend from the periphery to a concentric inner perforated wall. The periphery rotates past an arcuate concentric fixed wall which temporarily completes the outer wall of peripheral receptacles defined by the radial walls and the inner wall. The receptacles are filled and levelled while passing the outer wall, and are discharged at the outlet end of the latter into a horizontal duct by a radially-disposed air nozzle.
